“Nonprofit Workshop: 2013 Legal Update” with Frank Sommerville, JD, CPA, Weycer, Kaplan, Pulaski & Zuber, PC (CPE and MCLE Accredited) Tuesday, February 12, 2013

From affordable care to the fiscal cliff, it’s hard to sort out the legal implications for nonprofit organizations. This session is designed to provide an overview of the evolving environment that faces nonprofits. It will highlight changes that will require you to alter some of your practices and processes, and preview emerging issues and their potential to impact your future operations. Topics covered will include:
Federal items: Changes for 501(c)(3) organizations with trying to implement the Affordable Care Act; W-2 reporting of health care benefits paid by employers; Small Business Health Care Credit – who qualifies; Qualified Voluntary Settlement Program for contract labor to employees; Implications of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 for nonprofit organizations; Tax Law updates to include recent court cases, IRS rulings and new tax laws.
State items: Sales tax guidelines — both collection and exemptions.
Workshop qualifies for 3 hours of CPE and MCLE credit. Registration is $40.00. Cancellation fees is $5.00. NO REFUNDS will be issued on cancellations received after 12:00 Noon five working days prior to the seminar. A registration may be transferred to another individual; an additional registration fee will be charged to a nonmember CPA transferee. NO SHOWS forfeit the entire registration fee.

Join us at the Intel offices on February 20th for a free lunch and the following CLE sessions:
11:30am – 12:30pm: Entertainment Law for the Volunteer Attorney
One-hour presentation providing a general overview of entertainment law and the issues pro bono attorneys are most likely to face when representing artist clients in Texas, with those clients most likely being musicians, songwriters, filmmakers, and visual artists. Topics include basic copyright, trademark and idea submission issues (e.g., protections, enforcement, licensing), and an overview of film and music business deal points that appear in most entertainment transactions.

12:30pm – 1:30pm: AIA Changes Most Relevant to Pro Bono Clients
One-hour presentation providing a general overview of the effect of various provisions of the “America Invents Act” on patent pro bono practice. Topics include new filing fees, continuation practice, standards for obviousness, and representation of pro se inventors.

These sessions are designed to provide information to those interested in forming a tax exempt, nonprofit corporation, covering the basic function and structure of exempt organizations, bookkeeping and tax issues related to exempt organizations, and other pertinent information. FOR ATTORNEYS: The Copyright Society of the USA Mid-Winter Meeting February 14-16, 2013 in Austin, TX

We at TALA are thrilled to report that the Copyright Society of the USA (the only nation-wide organization devoted to copyright law, education and understanding) will host its upcoming Mid-Winter meeting in Austin February 14 through the 16th. This will mark the first time the Copyright Society brings its meeting to Texas. The program will cover, among other things, user-generated content, social media, video game law, international copyright development and will feature policy perspectives from Maria Pallante, the (new) Register of Copyrights. Plus it will offer some excellent networking opportunities with leading industry and IP lawyers from across the country and beyond. TALA is proud to be a Media Partner for this event. We at TALA encourage our legal volunteers to attend this event. For additional information, please consult The Copyright Society’s website.

In Memoriam: Bert Long, Jr.

The Staff and Board of TALA extends our condolences to the famly of Houston-based artist Bert Long, Jr. Selected as TALA’s Artist of the Year in 2008, Mr. Long was a long-time supporter of TALA dating back to TALA’s formative years and a champion of the arts in Texas for his entire career. He received a grant from the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts in 1987 and won the coveted Prix de Rome prize in 1990. He has exhibited locally at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and his work is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Menil Collection and the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) will screen a biopic on Log produced and directed by art patron John Guess Jr. Entitled BERT, the feature-length film features interviews with a number of art world leaders, including Rick Lowe of Project Row House and the late Peter Marzio, long-time director of the MFAH. The screening will take place Thursday, February 14 at 7:00pm at The Menil Collection. On Thursday, January 28, Houston Baptist University Curator Jim Edwards will present a number of Long’s rarely showm masterworks. The exhibit will take place in the University’s Contemporary Art Gallery (through April 18). These events are free and open to the public.
