Nonprofit Update: Tax and Legislative Developments, Tuesday, March 22, 2011

With all the last-minute legislating in Washington at the end of the year and this spring in Texas, this is a good time to review current developments as they affect nonprofit organizations. The session will address legislation, regulations, IRS rulings and court opinions, along with other relevant topics including healthcare credit, IRS audit and compliance check activity, governance developments, private inurement and benefit, intermediate sanctions, legislative and political activity. These sessions are designed to provide information to those interested in forming a tax exempt, nonprofit corporation, covering the basic function and structure of exempt organizations, bookkeeping and tax issues related to exempt organizations, and other pertinent information. “Records and Write-Offs” An Individual Tax Seminar for Artists Hosted by Austin Music Foundation and TALA, Monday, March 28, 2011

It’s that time of year again. Are you using best practices in your bookkeeping routine? AMF and TALA present a night of advice on record keeping for artists. The first part of the evening will be a discussion with local artist, Kit Holmes, who will answer questions about her bookkeeping method and let us in on how she keeps everything in perfect order. CPA and TALA Board Member Robert “Rex” Schuller will lead the interview with Kit and they’ll discuss tips and suggestions for an efficient bookkeeping routine. The second part of the evening will be specific to tax filings. Rex will cover deductions, exemptions and IRS filings. He’ll also talk about sales tax and its impact on merchandise sales, internet sales, downloads and more. TO REGISTER, please email [email protected]. This event is FREE to attend. Individual Income Tax Seminar for Artists Presented by Michele Stanton, Wednesday, March 30, 2011

If you missed February’s session, here’s your second chance! Structured with artists in mind, this seminar will address common concerns artists may have about hobby loss, and other IRS regulations pertaining to creative practice. Michele Stanton, CPA, is a long-time TALA volunteer and experienced CPA who often works with individual artists through TALA. Third Annual Menil Community Arts Festival, Saturday, April 2, 2011

The Menil Collection Museum, TALA, and a host of other surrounding arts organizations housed on the Menil Campus come together to host a free afternoon of art and entertainment that will extend across the Menil “campus” from West Alabama to Richmond Avenue. Highlighting the diversity of the Menil neighborhood arts community, the festival will include films and performances, from a drum circle to literary readings, art sales, a book fair and art workshops.
